Trump Signs Resolution to Restore Off-Road Vehicle Use in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
President Donald Trump has officially restored off-road vehicle (ORV) access in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area by signing a Congressional Review Act resolution. Introduced by Utah Republican Rep. Celeste Maloy and Senators Mike Lee and John Curtis, the resolution overturns a National Park Service rule that had limited motorized access on 24 miles of roads within the area.
Rep. Maloy highlighted the community’s concerns about restrictions, stating, "Utahns shouldn’t be shut out of decisions that affect their own backyard." Lee criticized the previous administration for what he described as "sue-and-settle policymaking," emphasizing that environmental groups should not dictate access to national recreation areas. Curtis added that the restoration of access is crucial to ensuring public lands remain available to all.
The rule, which came into effect on February 12, 2023, had been aimed at protecting remote locations, particularly the Orange Cliffs area. Conservationists expressed concern over the reversal, with Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance attorney Hanna Larsen describing it as a "dark day" for the region’s wilderness. The newly accessible routes include sections of the Poison Spring Loop and access roads to Lake Powell.
