Trump’s First 100 Days: Mixed Reactions from Utah Republicans
As President Donald Trump marks his first 100 days in office, a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll indicates a 42% approval rating among Americans. Despite this, many of his supporters in Utah express satisfaction with his initiatives on the economy, immigration, and government spending.
Teri Bishop, a middle-aged resident of Utah County, appreciates Trump’s commitment to his campaign promises. Marjorie Haun-Storland, a baby boomer from rural San Juan County, and Spencer Roberts, a young Ph.D. student in Salt Lake City, echo these sentiments, noting that Trump is more prepared this time around.
While the trio supports Trump’s immigration policies and his focus on deporting criminals, they hold mixed views on his economic strategies. Roberts voiced concerns about the ambiguous nature of tariff policies and believes they need clearer communication. Bishop echoed this, suggesting that increasing tariffs should be accompanied by lower income taxes to alleviate the financial burden on Americans.
On immigration, all three Republicans agree on the need for strict enforcement, particularly against those committing crimes. Bishop emphasizes the importance of legal immigration, recalling her family’s history of adhering to immigration laws. Roberts lauds Trump’s effectiveness at the southern border, although he acknowledges complexities in enforcement that have led to wrongful deportations.
Regarding the administration’s budget-cutting initiative, known as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Bishop, Haun-Storland, and Roberts applaud efforts to reduce federal bureaucracy. Despite potential chaos, they see long-term benefits in creating a more accountable government.
As the administration navigates the upcoming budget bill, the political landscape remains uncertain, with looming midterm elections that could shift power back to Democrats. This tension sets the stage for continued debate around Trump’s policies and their impact on the nation.
