Teen Missing for Six Weeks Found Safe in Colorado
SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (KUTV) — 15-year-old Alisa Petrov, who had been missing for six weeks, was located safe in Colorado. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) played a critical role in her recovery by disseminating her photograph and details across their network early in the investigation. While the direct impact of these posters is uncertain, NCMEC emphasizes their importance in raising awareness. Leemie Kahng-Sofer from NCMEC stated, “One of the most visible resources we have is the poster. We utilize them to get the child’s image out there.”
In 2024, NCMEC supported law enforcement in 29,568 missing children cases, successfully bringing 91% of these children home. According to former FBI agent Greg Rice, the FBI’s involvement in such cases hinges on federal statutes, which determine jurisdiction. When engaged, the FBI can leverage resources like flyers and inter-department notifications to aid in recovery efforts. The case of Alisa Petrov serves as a reminder of the collective effort needed from various agencies to ensure the safety of missing children.
