Utah Jewish Community Heightened Security Following Boulder Attack

Title: Utah’s Jewish Community on High Alert After Antisemitic Assault in Boulder

MILLCREEK, Utah — A recent antisemitic attack in Boulder, Colorado, where an Egyptian national threw Molotov cocktails at pro-Israel demonstrators, has left Utah’s Jewish community reeling. The assailant faces 16 counts of attempted murder, heightening fears in a community already grappling with unresolved security concerns. “This person planned it for a year,” said Ron Zamir, vice president of community relations for the United Jewish Federation of Utah. Rabbi Sam Spector of Congregation Kol Ami expressed his deep worries for community safety, noting the need for heightened security measures.

As Shavuot, a significant Jewish holiday, approached, Spector highlighted the urgent need for protective measures, recalling how security was an afterthought until the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. With ongoing events at Kol Ami requiring off-duty police presence, he lamented the financial burden on the congregation. Salt Lake City Police are committed to enhancing safety, encouraging vigilance within the community. Despite the unsettling climate, Zamir emphasized resilience, stating, “We don’t stop being Jewish. We don’t stop having our Jewish events.” The community remains united, reaffirming their strength amid adversity.
