Construction Begins on Controversial Utah Inland Port Project
SALT LAKE CITY — Construction has commenced on the Utah Inland Port, one of the largest economic development projects in state history, at the site of the old Salt Lake Valley landfill near I-80 and 7200 West. The $200 million project, expected to unfold over the next seven years, will revitalize a formerly polluted area while aiming to alleviate traffic and spur job growth in the region.
Supporters assert that the inland port will facilitate a more efficient flow of goods by utilizing rail, road, and air transport, thus creating thousands of jobs and injecting hundreds of millions into Utah’s economy. Abby Osborne, chair of the Utah Inland Port Authority, emphasized the significance of expanding infrastructure, particularly through rail connections.
However, the remediation of the landfill poses challenges with the potential surge of hazardous materials and gases. Gary McEntee of Ninigret Management highlighted the complexity of safely excavating decomposing waste and managing harmful leachate, particularly with growing environmental concerns over the nearby Great Salt Lake.
While the project has garnered local support in rural communities, urban residents remain divided. Critics warn against the rapid industrialization that the port promises, voicing concerns over air quality. Deeda Seed from the Stop the Polluting Port Coalition articulated grievances about the mixed objectives of job creation versus environmental health.
Local leaders, including Salt Lake City Council member Victoria Petro, acknowledged the dual concerns of economic opportunity and environmental protection, noting a shift toward more conscientious development practices.
