Utah Valley University’s NCAA Tournament Run Ends in Heartbreaking Loss to Cal Poly

EUGENE, Ore. – In a thrilling 11-inning battle, Cal Poly edged out Utah Valley University (UVU) 7-6, eliminating the Wolverines from the NCAA Eugene Regional on Sunday. The match, held at PK Park, saw UVU, led by new head coach Nate Rasmussen, conclude their first season with a commendable 33-29 record.

The game was tightly contested, tied at 6-6 when Utah Valley’s Dominic Longo II walked in the 10th inning, but missed opportunities with a failed bunt and two flyouts thwarted their chances. After UVU went scoreless in the 11th, Cal Poly’s Zach Daudet hit a decisive homer, sealing the game for the Mustangs.

Earlier, UVU showcased a strong performance, highlighted by Jayden Smith’s impressive 3-for-4 outing with four RBIs. The Wolverines initially took a 4-1 lead following Landon Frei’s grand slam but were unable to hold off Cal Poly’s comeback, which included five runs in the fourth inning.

This season, Utah Valley secured its first WAC Tournament title since 2016 and celebrated its inaugural NCAA Tournament berth. Meanwhile, Arizona continued its dominance by defeating Cal Poly 14-0 in the regional final, advancing to the Super Regionals.
