China Responds to Trump, Claiming U.S. Actions ‘Severely Undermine’ Trade Agreement

China accused the U.S. of violating a recently agreed 90-day trade truce after President Donald Trump claimed China had “totally violated” the agreement. The truce was intended to pause escalating tariffs between the two nations, which had surged above 100%. China’s Ministry of Commerce countered Trump’s accusations by asserting that it had adhered to the agreement while the U.S. imposed “discriminatory and restrictive measures” including export controls on artificial intelligence chips and visa revocations for Chinese students, undermining the truce.

The ministry urged the U.S. to rectify its actions, warning of potential strong repercussions if Washington continued its unilateral approach. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent alleged that China was withholding rare earth minerals that it committed to release, emphasizing that this was not indicative of a reliable partnership. Given that China supplies 60% of the global rare earth elements critical for various industries, Bessent expressed confidence that concerns could be resolved in anticipated talks between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Amid this trade tension, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s comments at the Shangri-La Dialogue urged allies in the Indo-Pacific region to boost defense spending due to perceived threats from China. This provoked a “strong” protest from China, which accused the U.S. of inciting discord and maintaining a confrontational stance. The Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized Hegseth for ignoring calls for peace and highlighted U.S. military actions in the South China Sea as contributing to regional tensions, framing them as a potential catalyst for conflict.
