Utah Jazz Appoints Austin Ainge as President of Basketball Operations
SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz announced the hiring of Austin Ainge as president of basketball operations on Tuesday, stirring curiosity about the team’s internal structure. Questions arise regarding who is ultimately in charge and the potential for nepotism, given that Austin is the son of CEO Danny Ainge.
Jazz owner Ryan Smith asserted that Austin will have the final say on personnel decisions, clearly defining his role amidst prior confusion when Danny Ainge was hired in December 2021. Smith emphasized, “This is Austin’s show,” aiming to alleviate concerns about decision-making authority.
Austin Ainge has spent 16 years in the NBA, previously serving as the assistant general manager for the Boston Celtics, showcasing his qualifications for the role. Smith noted that he had long sought to recruit Austin, who expressed eagerness to join the Jazz during a transformative period.
Despite Austin’s promotion, general manager Justin Zanik will maintain his position, now reporting directly to Austin. Zanik has publicly welcomed this change, appreciating the collaborative decision-making processes within the team. The Jazz, currently in a rebuild, are optimistic as Ainge takes the lead.
“We have a ton of optionality… I can’t wait to get started,” Austin stated.
