Utah Athletic Director Aiming for ‘Optimal Distribution’ in Settlement Negotiations

Utah Football Prepares for New Era with Revenue Sharing Framework

As NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) competition heats up in college athletics, Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham has voiced concerns over losing recruits and players to rival schools offering lucrative deals. In a bid to level the playing field, Utah is preparing to implement a revenue-sharing model contingent upon the approval of the House vs. NCAA settlement.

At the recent Big 12 annual meetings in Orlando, Utah athletic director Mark Harlan outlined the Utes’ strategic plans for this initiative. With expectations to share up to $20.5 million annually with student-athletes, Harlan emphasized that preparations have been underway for over a year. To enhance their efforts, he has integrated Utah’s NIL collectives in-house—a provision allowed by the settlement. Furthermore, Harlan appointed Patrick Nowlin, a chief revenue officer, to explore innovative funding avenues.

The transformative House vs. NCAA settlement encompasses $2.75 billion in damages for thousands of current and former student-athletes, addressing past restrictions on NIL opportunities. It not only allows schools to fully fund scholarships but also caps and expands rosters for various sports, including Olympic disciplines. A notable requirement of the settlement includes vetting all NIL agreements exceeding $600 through a new system being developed by Deloitte.

The Utes are also focused on maximizing game attendance and generating additional revenue through sports like basketball. Harlan expressed confidence about the restructuring efforts within the athletic department and the support from donors and university leadership, stating, "We feel very good about where we’re at."

With upcoming changes poised to reshape the landscape of college athletics, Utah is positioning itself as a competitive force in the new NIL-driven environment.
