Local Artists Honored at Prestigious Utah Awards Program

June 1, 2025, 6:00 a.m. – The Utah Division of Arts & Museums has long supported the state’s vibrant artistic community, notably through the Utah Artist Fellowship. Established in 1899, this program recognizes Utah artists for their exceptional creativity with cash awards, chosen by esteemed out-of-state arts professionals.

This year, five fellowships were awarded across four categories: Design Arts, Literary Arts, Performing Arts (Theatre), and Visual Arts, with Literary Arts debuting as a new category. The selection process involves rigorous evaluations of both narrative applications and portfolio samples over the past five years.

Visual Arts Fellows Eugene Tapahe, Christopher Lynn, Nancy Rivera, Ariel C. Wilson, and Xi Zhang showcased innovative works that impressed juror Lana Meador. In Design Arts, Alise Anderson, Laura Boardman, Zak Jensen, Kimo Watanabe, and Matthew Pedersen were commended for their creative perspectives. Literary Arts juror Ira Sukrungruang praised the lyrical brilliance of fellows Kimberly Johnson, Lynn Kilpatrick, Patrick Madden, Christian McKay Heidicker, and Paisley Rekdal. Performing Arts Fellows include Sarah Shippobotham, Janine Sobeck Knighton, and others, recognized for their artistry and vision.

The Division remains committed to fostering artistic talent in Utah, encouraging continued growth in the local arts scene.
