Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has reportedly conducted a significant drone attack, striking over 40 Russian bombers deep within Russian territory as part of an operation named “Spiderweb.” This operation targeted strategic aircraft at the Belaya air base in Irkutsk, Siberia, nearly 3,000 miles from Ukraine. Dramatic footage allegedly shows bombers being bombed, causing extensive damage estimated at over $2 billion, according to an SBU source.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not directly commented on the attack but emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to protecting its independence on social media, following updates from the SBU. Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, hinted at the operation with a spiderweb emoji.
The operation’s planning took more than a year and involved smuggling drones and mobile wooden cabins into Russia. These drones were concealed beneath cabin roofs on trucks, and during the attack, the roofs were opened remotely to launch the drones. The operation was reported to have been overseen by Zelenskyy himself.
Russia has not officially commented on the attack, but regional officials reported drone activity in connection with the incidents. The attack coincided with ongoing hostilities, including a Russian missile strike which killed 12 Ukrainian servicemen and injuring 60 others.
As Russia and Ukraine prepare for a second round of talks in Istanbul, Zelenskyy outlined key negotiation points, including a call for a full ceasefire, the release of prisoners, and the return of abducted children. Complications arose from incidents involving the collapse of two bridges in Russian regions, which Russian officials attributed to sabotage, leading to casualties.
The situation remains tense as both sides escalate military actions.
