Revival of Uranium Mining in Utah Spurred by Trump’s Energy Policies
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — In the arid landscape of southeastern Utah, the uranium mining industry, long dormant since the Cold War era, is set for a potential revival under the Trump administration. The Bureau of Land Management has expedited regulatory approvals for Anfield Energy’s Velvet-Wood mine, allowing it to proceed with plans to open for the first time since the 1980s.
Typically, the review process for such projects takes months, but the Bureau approved the mine’s plans in just 11 days, citing a “national energy emergency” declared by President Trump. This quickened approach extends to various energy projects, excluding renewable sources, as part of a broader strategy to bolster U.S. energy security.
In addition to Velvet-Wood, Anfield Energy is also exploring the reopening of the Shootaring Canyon uranium mill, while Energy Fuels, the top U.S. uranium miner, commenced operations at its Pinyon Plain mine near the Grand Canyon.
Despite signs of a revived industry, challenges persist. Global uranium prices, while higher than their low point seven years ago, remain volatile and need to stabilize for domestic production to be economically viable. The U.S. currently imports approximately 98% of its uranium, primarily from Canada, Australia, and Kazakhstan.
Local residents express concerns about the environmental impacts of renewed mining activities, recalling the legacy of contamination from past operations. Advocacy groups like Uranium Watch and the Grand Canyon Trust have criticized the fast-tracking of mining proposals, arguing for greater public involvement and environmental scrutiny.
As the energy landscape evolves, the future of uranium mining in Utah remains uncertain, dependent on market conditions and regulatory frameworks. The industry’s potential resurrection could bring economic opportunities but also raises critical environmental considerations.
