Utah Democratic Party Elects New Leadership at 2025 State Convention
OGDEN, Utah (KUTV) — The Utah Democratic Party made significant leadership changes at its 2025 State Convention held in Ogden on Saturday. Approximately 600 delegates attended in person with over 800 participating remotely to elect the new leadership team.
Brian King, a seasoned Utah legislator with 16 years of experience and the Democratic contender against Gov. Spencer Cox in 2024, was elected as the new party chair. In supporting roles, Susan Merrill was named vice chair, Brad Dickter as secretary, and Catherine Voutaz as treasurer. King expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’m honored to have earned the trust of our delegates to serve as Chair for the next two years. Over the past four months, we’ve traveled the state, hearing directly from Utah Democrats about their hopes, frustrations, and vision for the future.”
Diane Lewis, the outgoing chair, expressed her support for King, saying she is “delighted to pass the torch.” She highlighted the new leadership’s energy and community understanding.
The convention also saw the adoption of a forward-looking platform focused on “economic security, equality of opportunity, and investing in the common good,” reinforcing the party’s commitment to inclusivity. King emphasized the importance of this new direction, stating, “This is a new era and this is our moment. As Chair, I’m ready to lead the charge to hold out-of-touch Republicans accountable and to connect with voters across the state and political spectrum.”
With this new leadership, the Utah Democratic Party aims to strengthen its presence and effectiveness leading up to future elections, promising to advocate for change and challenge political monopolies.
