Charred Remains of Man Discovered in Stone Mountain Park, Georgia

Authorities in Georgia are investigating the discovery of a badly burned body of a young man found on Saturday in Stone Mountain Park. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting local authorities with the case. A hiker reported the body around 8:18 a.m., located on the less-traveled side of the mountain, approximately 100 yards from the Summit Skyride, a cable car attraction. Stone Mountain Department of Public Safety spokesperson John Bankhead described the area as not remote but rarely visited, noting that even he, an avid hiker, was unaware of its existence.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. Bankhead indicated that authorities may have a preliminary identity for the deceased based on personal belongings found at the scene, including a parked vehicle, but this identification has yet to be confirmed.

Additionally, the fire linked to the body is under investigation by the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department’s arson unit. Stone Mountain Park is known for its iconic attractions, including the largest high relief sculpture globally, depicting Confederate figures Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. This controversial monument, which has sparked varied opinions among visitors, was completed in stages between 1924 and 1972. Stone Mountain Park is situated about 20 miles east of Atlanta. The circumstances surrounding the body’s discovery are considered unusual, prompting intense scrutiny from law enforcement and park officials.
