Brian King, Former Governor Nominee, Elected Chair

Utah Democrats Elect Brian King as New Chair Amid Mounting Challenges

Ogdense, UT – The Utah Democratic Party convened at Ogden High School on May 31, 2025, for its state convention, where former state lawmaker Brian King was elected as the new party chair. King secured 52% of the vote, defeating rising campaign consultant Ben Peck, amidst a backdrop of a nearly three-decade losing streak in statewide elections.

King, who previously lost to Republican Gov. Spencer Cox, addressed the party delegates by expressing their collective frustration with both the GOP and the Democratic leadership. "We need a chair who’s not afraid to get their hands dirty," he urged, emphasizing the necessity for strategic planning and unity to revitalize the party.

Peck, supported notably by Salt Lake County Council member Natalie Pinkney, highlighted the need for a fresh approach in a party he deemed stagnant. He characterized the political landscape as an "existential crisis," claiming that the party needed more committed leadership.

Despite a couple of other candidates, including Archie Williams III, who faced backlash for his pro-life stance, and Jonathan Lopez, who criticized King and Peck, the focus remained on the leading candidates. Both King and the Utah Democratic Party are prioritizing the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, aiming to reclaim some footing in an overwhelmingly Republican state.

Additionally, the party has initiated a lawsuit challenging the state’s congressional district maps, claiming they were manipulated to weaken Democratic representation. With an eye on future elections, delegates passed a resolution condemning any attempts to extend presidential terms, countering recent speculation surrounding Donald Trump.

In his victory, King expressed hope for the party’s future, citing waning approval ratings for the White House and plans to harness public discontent to build support as they prepare for the next electoral battles.
