Utah State Men Compete on Day Three of NCAA West First Rounds

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Utah State men’s track and field team showcased its talent at the 2025 NCAA West First Rounds, with 10 athletes competing in five events on Friday.

The standout performance came from the men’s 4×100-meter relay team, made up entirely of freshmen: Daniel Chase, Ayodele Ojo, Mathew Hall, and Diego Aguirre-Stewart. They finished with an impressive time of 39.54 seconds, just a tenth of a second shy of qualifying for the national championships. This result also marked the third-fastest time in Utah State’s history for the event.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Garrett Woodhouse clocked 8:51.69, finishing seventh in his heat and improving his overall place by 14 spots to 20th. Junior Logan Garnica completed the event in 9:48.24, concluding a notable season that included setting a Utah State record and earning the NCAA Elite 90 Award in cross country.

The discus event saw senior Nate Franz and sophomore Joseph Turner compete, with Franz placing 30th with a throw of 54.95 meters (180-3) and capping off his career with notable accolades. Turner finished 44th with a mark of 50.37 meters (165-3).

Freshman Taite Priestley had a strong debut, clearing 2.09 meters (6-10.25) in the high jump to tie for 25th overall, matching his recent bronze-medal performance at the Mountain West Championships. In the 800-meter quarterfinals, sophomore Landon Bott finished sixth in his heat with a time of 1:49.14, adding another strong showing to his season.

Saturday’s events will feature the women’s team, including sophomore Shelby Jensen in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
