Salt Lake City Celebrates Pride Month with New Sego Belonging Flag
SALT LAKE CITY — In celebration of Pride Month, Salt Lake City officials, in collaboration with the Utah Pride Center, raised the new Sego Belonging Flag on Friday, highlighting the city’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment within the LGBTQ community. Jackson Carter, director of programming and outreach for the Utah Pride Center, emphasized the importance of fostering a welcoming atmosphere amid recent political scrutiny surrounding LGBTQ rights.
The annual Utah Pride Festival, set for June 7 and 8, including a vibrant parade on Sunday, aims to counteract ongoing legislative debates regarding LGBTQ issues, especially those affecting the transgender community. Recent laws, including HB77, restrict opportunities for transgender students and limit the display of pride flags in schools and public spaces.
In response, the Salt Lake City Council adopted the Sego Belonging Flag, which allows the city to embrace diverse communities while adhering to state regulations. Council member Chris Wharton affirmed that this flag symbolizes a commitment to inclusivity, reinforcing that acceptance should celebrate differences.
Despite challenges, Carter noted significant progress in LGBTQ rights over the past two decades and expressed optimism for future acceptance, reiterating the resilience of the community.
