Mark Harlan Shares Updates on Utah and Big 12 Spring Meetings

Press Release: Utah Athletics Poised for Change Amid NCAA Transformation

SALT LAKE CITY — The landscape of college sports is undergoing a significant transformation, with the Big 12 Spring Meetings revealing critical updates on revenue sharing and the future of the College Football Playoff (CFP). Utah Athletic Director Mark Harlan emphasized the university’s readiness to adapt to these changes during a recent discussion.

The NCAA’s anticipated $2.75 billion House v. NCAA settlement could herald a new era, allowing institutions to provide athletes with direct payments from various revenue streams. While the settlement awaits final approval, ongoing conversations indicate progress. “The House Settlement appears to be getting closer to realization,” Harlan noted, outlining Utah’s preparedness to implement revenue-sharing practices.

Utah, eager to maximize its revenue-sharing potential—estimated at $20.5 million—has spent over a year strategizing on internal structures and best practices. “We feel very good about where we’re at…thanks to our great donors and administrative support,” Harlan proudly asserted.

Alongside financial shifts, the future CFP format is under scrutiny. A new 12-team playoff will be introduced in 2024, with discussions hinting at a potential 16-team format for 2025. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark indicated that increased access is necessary, advocating for measures ensuring success on the field rather than through automatic bids.

Harlan echoed this sentiment, leaning toward a format that rewards accomplishments, stating, “I’m for the expansion…we want to earn it on the field.”

As Utah navigates these changes, innovative revenue generation is becoming increasingly crucial. With the appointment of a chief revenue officer, the university is exploring unconventional avenues to boost earnings in this new collegiate landscape.

Together, Utah Athletics and the Big 12 embrace the evolution of intercollegiate athletics, signaling a new chapter in collegiate sports. For ongoing updates, follow Steve Bartle on X or tune into KSL Sports.
