Utah Valley Upsets Oregon in Close Regional Matchup
EUGENE, Ore. – In a thrilling contest, Utah Valley University stunned the Oregon Ducks, clinching a 6-5 victory in the Eugene Regional on Friday night. The No. 4 seed Wolverines, now boasting a 33-27 record, showcased their offensive prowess as Jimmy De Anda drove in three crucial runs with a key double and a single.
Utah Valley ignited their scoring in the third inning, producing four runs that began with De Anda’s run-scoring double down the left-field line. This was followed by Luke Iverson’s RBI single and a two-run hit from Mason Strong, propelling them to a commanding 4-0 lead.
Despite Oregon’s valiant effort, including a significant four-run performance in the bottom of the fourth aided by Drew Smith’s two-run homer and Anson Aroz’s solo shot, they could not recover. De Anda’s two-run single in the seventh brought the Wolverines’ lead to 6-3. Smith’s additional solo home run in the eighth, marking his two-homer game, wasn’t enough to stage a comeback.
Carston Herman (5-3) snagged the win for Utah Valley, with Cooper Littledike earning his sixth save. Jason Reitz (5-1) was tagged with the loss. The Wolverines advance to face No. 2 seed Arizona on Saturday, while Oregon moves to a loser-out matchup against Cal Poly.
