Utah County Initiates $1.6 Billion Nebo Regional Water Project
OREM, Utah (KUTV) — In response to rising water demands from a rapidly growing population, Utah County water officials are embarking on the $1.6 billion Nebo Regional Water Project. Spearheaded by the Central Utah Water Conservancy District (CUWCD), the initiative aims to ensure sustainable water access for southern Utah County.
The project consists of two key components: enclosing the outdated Strawberry Highline Canal and constructing a new drinking water treatment plant in Salem. Roger Pearson of CUWCD emphasizes that enclosing the century-old canal will both reduce flood risks and increase the availability of clean water while maintaining agricultural and residential irrigation needs.
Although the project is at the concept design stage, funding discussions are underway. Pearson anticipates financial support will stem from federal funds and local bond measures. “Together, we’re going to build a project that meets the needs of growing communities,” he stated.
Officials expect the project to be completed by 2032, but residents will have to wait for visible progress. To keep the community informed, two open houses are scheduled — one on June 10 at Payson City Hall and another on June 12 at Juab High School Gym, both from 5 to 7 p.m.
