Utah Beach Volleyball Program Cut: Players Rally for Reinstatement
On April 29, Colby Burleson attended a meeting he hoped would lead to his promotion as head coach for the Utah beach volleyball team, coming off a record season with 21 wins. Instead, it was a shocking announcement from Athletic Director Mark Harlan: the program was being discontinued.
Burleson described the moment as a personal blow, as he and the team were informed with minimal explanation, surprised by the decision’s abruptness. Harlan cited the sport’s lack of growth and financial losses, indicating an annual deficit of about $157,000. He confirmed that only three other teams in the Big 12 limit the team’s NCAA championship qualifications.
In the wake of the announcement, team members expressed frustration over the lack of communication and respect from university officials, stating the situation was poorly handled. Senior Sonja Wessel highlighted feelings of disrespect during a follow-up meeting intended for athletes to voice concerns, where players felt dismissed and belittled.
In response, the 18-member team began to mobilize, supported by alum Melissa Powell, a professional beach volleyball player. Powell recently proposed utilizing the new Beach Box Utah facility for team practices and offered to bring a high-profile coach on-board, emphasizing her commitment to aid the program’s revival.
Despite the university’s dismissal of the program’s viability, players remain determined to advocate for its reinstatement. Over 5,500 signatures have now been gathered in a petition supporting the cause, and athletes continue to work closely with university officials as they navigate their futures, some considering transferring to continue their volleyball careers.
The outcome of the program’s fate remains uncertain, but the commitment of its former athletes showcases the enduring passion for women’s sports at Utah.
