Jeep Unveils New Cherokee SUV, Announces Hybrid Version

Jeep has introduced its new Cherokee SUV, aiming to revitalize the brand when it launches later this year. This midsize SUV is set to include a hybrid powertrain option, though specific details on whether it will be a traditional hybrid or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) remain undisclosed. Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf emphasized the model’s significance in offering more choices and innovation to customers, positioning it strategically between the Jeep Compass and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Affordability has been a concern for Jeep, with the 2022 entry-level Cherokee priced around $30,000—close to the Compass at about $27,000 and lower than the roughly $36,500 starting price for the Grand Cherokee. The company did not provide additional information about the vehicle’s production location, but analysts suggest it will be manufactured in Mexico, a decision predating President Trump’s administration and its associated tariffs on imported vehicles.

The discontinuation of the previous generation Cherokee, which was produced in Illinois, was part of Jeep’s cost-cutting measures. This move, along with the cancellation of the smaller Renegade SUV, has contributed to a sales slump for the brand, which has witnessed six consecutive years of decline, including a 10% drop in the first quarter of this year.

The new Cherokee is expected to be a key focus for Stellantis’s incoming CEO Antonio Filosa, who previously led Jeep’s turnaround efforts. The new model is seen as critical for boosting Jeep’s sales and reinvigorating its presence in the competitive SUV market.
