Arizona Chamber of Commerce Urges Action to Save Diamondbacks Amid Utah’s Ambitions
Phoenix, AZ – May 27, 2025 – Danny Seiden, president of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, has issued a clarion call for state funding to enhance Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, citing growing concerns over potential threats from Utah. Seiden humorously lamented the loss of Arizona’s hockey team, now known as the Utah Mastodons, but emphasized that the Diamondbacks could face a similar fate if decisive actions are not taken.
During an appearance on The Mike Broomhead Show, Seiden expressed his anxiety about the Diamondbacks potentially relocating to Utah, where state leaders are aggressively courting Major League Baseball. He explained that the Diamondbacks are seeking financial assistance to upgrade Chase Field, specifically through proposed legislation that would allow the team to recapture tax revenues generated at the stadium. Seiden stressed the urgency for these funds within the next two years.
The situation in Utah is heating up, as the state legislature has already passed measures facilitating the construction of a new baseball stadium should MLB decide to grant them a team. “Utah is being very aggressive. Portland is showing similar ambitions,” Seiden remarked, adding that their stadium proposals involve investments in the range of $600-$800 million—far beyond what the Diamondbacks are currently requesting.
Seiden is determined to retain baseball in Arizona and even restore hockey, advocating for cohesive leadership from local stakeholders, including Suns owner Mat Ishbia, to foster development in downtown Phoenix. "We need real leadership,” he asserted, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to prevent the state from losing its sports franchises to neighboring regions.
As Arizona faces a pivotal moment for its sports future, the call to action resonates deeply with the community and stakeholders alike.
