Why Red Line TRAX Riders Might Feel Frustrated This Summer

Temporary Changes in TRAX Service for University of Utah Commuters

SALT LAKE CITY — Commuters relying on the Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA) TRAX system for access to the University of Utah are experiencing significant service changes this summer. The Red Line, which typically connects passengers from the courthouse to the University Medical Center, is temporarily closed due to essential maintenance work. Riders like Michelle Rios, a University of Utah Health employee, are now using bus service instead, with transfers expected to add delays of up to 45 minutes.

UTA spokesperson Gavin Gustafson emphasized this maintenance phase aims to enhance on-time performance, ride quality, and safety. He noted that the infrastructure upgrades are crucial since misaligned rail tracks can lead to increased wear and tear. The maintenance work is part of a broader initiative started two years ago.

While the Red Line remains operational for other areas, limited service will be provided from July 3-5 for events at the university and Rice-Eccles Stadium. Full Red Line service is scheduled to resume on August 17, ensuring improved travel conditions for commuters. Riders are encouraged to check bus schedules and plan accordingly during this period of adjustment.
