Utah Football Eyes Resurgence in 2025 Season

SALT LAKE CITY — After two challenging seasons, Utah football is poised for a major turnaround in 2025. With a completely revamped offensive roster and coaching staff, the Utes are optimistic following a solid spring training. Having missed out on being the Big 12 favorite last year, they are now set to clash with new expectations as underdogs.

According to ESPN’s updated SP+ rankings, Utah ranks 31st nationally and faces the 55th toughest schedule. This positions them with a fair shot at contention for a Big 12 title if they meet their own goals.

In their season opener, Utah will face UCLA at the Rose Bowl on August 30. The Bruins, struggling after a disappointing 5-7 season in their first year in the Big Ten, are also in a period of transition. Head coach DeShaun Foster has revamped his staff, parting ways with key figures, including offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. The Bruins have recruited 30 new players, including former Utah running back Anthony Woods, to rebuild their offense, which suffered greatly last season with an anemic rushing attack.

Although UCLA’s new quarterback, Nico Iamaleava, who transferred from Tennessee, has talent—throwing for over 2,600 yards last season—his inexperience with the coaching staff may hinder performance early on against a Utes team that’s historically dominated the Bruins, winning six of their last seven matchups.

Utah’s subsequent game on September 6 against Cal Poly, an FCS team that struggled last season, offers a chance for redemption regardless of the opener’s outcome. This match is set to give fans a first glimpse of Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, further fueling hope for an effective 2025 campaign.
