Intermountain Health St. George Regional Hospital Unveils Robotic-Assisted Technology for Total Knee Replacement Procedures

Intermountain Health Introduces Innovative Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement Surgery in Southern Utah

ST. GEORGE, UT – November 2024 – Intermountain Health is making strides in orthopedic surgery with the launch of VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Surgery for total knee replacements at its Southwest Orthopedics – Sports Medicine clinic in St. George. This advanced technology allows surgeons to tailor procedures to each patient’s unique anatomy, enhancing precision and efficiency during surgery.

Dr. Robert Jamieson and Dr. Darin K. Allred, the first surgeons to utilize this groundbreaking approach, perform over 500 knee replacements annually, including more than 250 robotic-assisted procedures. "The key to this technology is that it enhances preparation and accuracy while customizing care for each patient," stated Dr. Jamieson.

Recent patient Jay Sessions, who underwent robotic-assisted knee surgery in January 2025, described his experience as "pure joy," highlighting a remarkable recovery from previous mobility limitations. Post-surgery, he has reported no pain, indicating the effectiveness of this innovative technique.

Dr. Allred emphasized the significant benefits of robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty, which include enhanced precision, smaller incisions, and reduced soft tissue damage. These advancements can lead to quicker recovery times, shorter hospital stays, and improved overall outcomes for patients.

While VELYS technology enriches the orthopedic program, traditional surgical methods remain available and are tailored to individual patient needs through consultations with physicians.
