Fortis Institute Explores Trucker Lifestyle in the Wake of Driver Shortages

Truck Driver Shortage Sparks Demand for New CDL Graduates in Luzerne County

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — The Fortis Institute’s commercial driver’s license (CDL) program is addressing a critical shortage of truck drivers, a situation exacerbated by an aging workforce and the booming e-commerce demand. Program Director Frank Tunis highlights the urgency of filling these roles as consumers increasingly expect swift delivery services, like those offered by companies such as Amazon.

With over four decades of driving experience, Tunis emphasizes that truck driving is more than just employment; it’s a lifestyle choice. Many seasoned drivers, particularly from the baby boomer generation, are retiring, contributing to the shortage. Tunis notes, “It’s harder now to find young people that want to do that job,” referencing the commitment required, which often entails being away from home for days at a time.

Students like William Race are stepping up to fill this void. Race is nearing completion of his CDL training and views the opportunity as a family tradition, although he prefers local routes to maintain proximity to family. The CDL course consists of 480 hours combining classroom instruction with practical driving experiences.

Tunis reiterates the importance of equipping future drivers with the necessary skills and knowledge, covering safe driving practices, nutrition on the road, and professional behavior. Potential drivers can begin training at 18 but must wait until they are 21 to drive out-of-state, making the program accessible to a diverse age group, including those in their 30s and 40s seeking a second career.

To learn more about obtaining a CDL, interested individuals can access additional information through the Fortis Institute’s website.
