Sundance Film Festival Relocates to Boulder, Colorado, After 40 Years in Utah
In a significant shift for the independent film landscape, the Sundance Film Festival will leave its long-time home in Utah for Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027. Announced by the Sundance Institute, the decision follows a yearlong bidding process, with Boulder emerging victorious over Cincinnati and a joint bid from Salt Lake City and Park City.
Founded by actor-director Robert Redford, Sundance has called Park City home since 1981. The board’s decision comes as the festival prepares for its final Utah event, scheduled for January 22 through February 1, 2026. Eugene Hernandez, the festival director, emphasized that this upcoming celebration will honor the festival’s rich history in the Beehive State.
Acting CEO Amanda Kelso expressed gratitude towards Utah, acknowledging the longstanding relationship that has shaped the festival, but highlighted Colorado as a space for future growth. Redford lauded the move, asserting it would foster innovation and storytelling, while also acknowledging the inevitability of change.
Despite significant bid efforts, including $5.53 million in public funding and private contributions totaling $10 million from Utah, the institute felt Boulder offered a more promising future. The economic implications for Utah are substantial; previous festivals have injected $132 million into the local economy.
Concerns about Utah’s political climate played a role in discussions, yet Sundance board chair Ebs Burnough insisted that politics were not a defining factor in the decision. Following the announcement, Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed disappointment, deeming the departure a mistake and indicating plans for a new film festival to honor the state’s cinematic legacy.
As Syracuse transitions to Boulder, it embarks on a new chapter, promising continued support for independent filmmakers while solidifying its presence in the vibrant artistic community of Colorado.
