Sundance Film Festival Moves from Utah to Colorado: A New Chapter
Boulder, CO – In a historic shift, the Sundance Film Festival has announced its decision to relocate from Utah, where it has thrived for over 40 years, to Boulder, Colorado. Acting CEO Amanda Kelso emphasized that Colorado provides a more conducive environment for the festival’s mission of fostering diverse voices and innovative storytelling.
The decision stems from growing concerns regarding Utah’s political climate and its impact on inclusivity. Democratic Rep. Brianna Titone highlighted that many festival-goers felt less welcomed in Utah, particularly due to recent legislation perceived as hostile toward LGBTQ+ communities. Criticism has been directed at Utah’s new laws, including a ban on pride flags on government property and restrictions on transgender students. These policies raised questions about the state’s openness and led to apprehensions among potential attendees.
While some Utah officials argue that the festival’s progressive narrative could spark dialogue in a conservative landscape, Titone counters that attendees should be free from concerns about their safety and identity. “You don’t want to be thinking about whether you can use a bathroom without facing consequences,” she explained.
Despite assertions from Sundance’s board chair Ebs Burnough that political factors were secondary in their decision-making, the festival’s values of inclusivity and progressiveness resonate more closely with Colorado’s recent policies. Titone maintained that Utah’s political climate ultimately influenced Sundance’s departure.
As Boulder prepares to welcome the festival, the move has raised questions about what Utah loses—a unique opportunity to experience a vibrant festival that champions diverse storytelling right in the heart of its conservative state.
