Increase in DUI Arrests Over Memorial Day Weekend in Utah
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) has reported a notable rise in DUI arrests during the Memorial Day weekend, emphasizing efforts to keep impaired drivers off the roads. Troopers mobilized with a focused mission, particularly targeting Salt Lake County, which has recorded the highest number of arrests.
According to UHP Sgt. Jon Watson, DUI arrests have doubled compared to the previous weekend, showcasing the effectiveness of collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, who also deployed extra shifts. While alcohol-related offenses remain predominant, there has been a concerning increase in THC-related DUI incidents.
As the weekend progresses, UHP has responded to multiple crashes involving intoxicated drivers. In light of the increased enforcement, Watson urges Utahns to prioritize safety. “If you’re going out to drink, have a plan—be it a designated driver or a rideshare service,” he advised.
The UHP will continue patrolling throughout the holiday to ensure public safety, advocating responsible choices as people celebrate the long weekend.
