Bold yet bipartisan Utah politician steps down after decades of public service

Salt Lake County Council Veteran Jim Bradley Bids Farewell After 24 Years

In a political landscape often marked by polarization, Jim Bradley, a recently retired Salt Lake County Council member, stands out for his dedication to collaboration and civility. After nearly six decades in Utah politics, the 78-year-old leader chose to step down, expressing a desire to avoid dying in office. “I don’t want to be senile in office,” he remarked, acknowledging that it was time to leave while cherishing his numerous contributions.

Bradley’s political journey began in 1968 with the anti-Vietnam War movement, but he didn’t secure an election win until 1990. He notably played key roles in various campaigns, including the successful reelection of Frank Moss, Utah’s last Democratic U.S. senator, and orchestrated campaign efforts for other significant figures.

In 2001, the governance of Utah’s most populous county transitioned to a council system, where Bradley served diligently for 24 years. He was instrumental in projects like downzoning near Cottonwood canyons and honoring cultural icons such as Maurice Abravanel by naming a downtown building after him, highlighting his commitment to local heritage.

Colleagues praised his ability to separate personal relationships from political disagreements. County Council Chair Laurie Stringham noted Bradley’s civil approach, which fostered collaboration across party lines. “He was always cordial; it was never personal,” she said.

Reflecting on his legacy, Bradley emphasized the joy he found in public service, stating, “I can drive around town and see things that I played a part in.” As he transitions to retirement, he plans to embrace fishing, leaving behind a notable void that is felt by many in the council and the broader community.
