Utah Utes Ranked Among Top College Football Programs of 21st Century
In a recent analysis marking 25 years of college football in the 21st Century, Stewart Mandel of The Athletic ranked the top 25 programs, placing the Utah Utes at No. 22. The rankings were based on nine metrics, including win percentage, bowl appearances, and conference titles. The Utes boast a .555 win percentage, five BCS/New Year’s Six bowl appearances, and four conference championships. They have achieved 17 wins against top 10 teams and 42 against top 25 opponents, spending nearly 10% of the time ranked in the top 10.
Under the leadership of head coaches Urban Meyer and Kyle Whittingham, Utah had undefeated seasons in 2004 and 2008 while in the Mountain West before joining the Pac-12 in 2011. Whittingham has since guided the Utes to four double-digit-win seasons and Pac-12 titles in 2021 and 2022. The Utes’ ranking is notable as they sit between Iowa and Oklahoma State, both led by long-tenured coaches. Ohio State tops Mandel’s list, while Michigan State claims the 25th spot. TCU is the only other Big 12 team featured at No. 19.
