RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Unveil New Jersey’s First Freestanding Cancer Hospital
New Brunswick, NJ – May 2025 – RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute proudly announced the opening of the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center, a groundbreaking facility that is set to transform cancer care in New Jersey and beyond. As one of only 13 freestanding cancer hospitals in the United States, this state-of-the-art center integrates inpatient and outpatient services, as well as advanced research laboratories, all designed around a patient-centered ethos.
During the inaugural ceremony, key leaders emphasized the center’s mission of providing compassionate care. Dr. Steven K. Libutti, the Director of Rutgers Cancer Institute, expressed that the facility aims to create a comforting environment for patients, stating, “To ‘wrap a blanket’ around the patient” highlights our commitment not only to advanced medical treatments but also to addressing emotional needs during a challenging time.
The cancer center is positioned to enhance collaboration between researchers and clinicians, facilitating real-time exchanges that can significantly impact patient outcomes. Dr. Andrew M. Evens, Deputy Director of Clinical Services, introduced the cutting-edge technologies available within the center. With 96 private inpatient beds, the facility also prioritizes outpatient care, encompassing a broad spectrum of treatments for both pediatric and adult patients.
Among its many features are 10 advanced surgical suites equipped with the latest technology, including robotic surgery options. The center houses four linear accelerators—some of the most advanced radiation technology globally—integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment precision.
As New Jersey’s first and only freestanding cancer hospital, the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center is poised to elevate the quality of care for cancer patients, emphasizing both innovative treatments and a compassionate approach.
