Rob Axson Defeats Phil Lyman to Lead Utah GOP

Rob Axson Re-elected as Chair of Utah Republican Party Amidst Convention Showdown

OREM — In a closely contested race, Rob Axson has been re-elected as chairman of the Utah Republican Party for another two years, defeating challenger Phil Lyman at the party’s organizing convention held at the UCCU Center. Axson won with a vote of 1,340 to Lyman’s 1,215, backed by prominent endorsements, including former President Donald Trump and Senator Mike Lee.

Axson’s campaign was centered on unifying the party and fostering growth. "Delegates want to see additional momentum," he told reporters, highlighting his accomplishments over the last two years. He criticized a law that permits candidates to gather signatures for ballot access, advocating for a party that welcomes diverse ideas and collaboration.

During the convention, Senator Mike Lee praised Axson for his efforts in mobilizing the delegate base and defending the caucus-convention system, asserting that no one has done more to strengthen party unity. The convention also saw significant discussions about a proposed amendment that would have stripped party membership from candidates who opted for the signature-gathering route. Ultimately, delegates voted to remove the proposal from the agenda.

In a passionate speech, Lyman rallied his supporters, drawing parallels between his challenges within the party and historical events, including biblical parables. His remarks highlighted a perceived persecution by establishment members, which some attendees likened to historical witch trials.

As the convention progressed, Lee called on Governor Spencer Cox to convene a special legislative session to reconsider SB54, a law that critics argue complicates ballot access for party members. He urged lawmakers to restore more control to the party regarding candidate nominations.

With Axson at the helm for another term, the Utah GOP navigates a path of unity, amidst ongoing debates about the future of its electoral processes.
