Brigham Young Quarterback Jake Retzlaff Facing Serious Allegations in Civil Lawsuit
Brigham Young University (BYU) quarterback Jake Retzlaff has been accused of rape in a civil lawsuit filed this week in Salt Lake County. The lawsuit, brought forth by a woman referred to as Jane Doe, alleges that Retzlaff assaulted her at his Utah residence in November 2023 after a visit to play the video game "Fortnite." The plaintiff claims Retzlaff engaged in violent behavior, including rape, strangulation, and biting, and is seeking over $300,000 in damages for assault, battery, and emotional distress.
Retzlaff’s attorney, Mark Baute, asserted the quarterback’s "factual innocence" and expressed confidence that justice would prevail through the judicial process. He emphasized Retzlaff’s commitment to focus on football while respecting the legal proceedings.
The lawsuit details that Doe and Retzlaff connected via social media before meeting in person in late November. After initially socializing with friends, the situation escalated when the two were alone, leading to Retzlaff allegedly attempting to engage Doe in non-consensual sexual acts despite her clear objections and efforts to withdraw.
Following the incident, Doe sought medical attention and underwent a rape kit examination a few days later. Although she initially hesitated to name Retzlaff due to fear and shock, she later identified him when contacted by police regarding a separate complaint.
In response to the allegations, the Provo Police Department stated they are aware of the civil case and noted that preliminary investigations yielded no actionable evidence. They assured their commitment to supporting victims of sexual abuse while also contesting claims that their officers discouraged Doe from pursuing justice.
BYU has acknowledged the lawsuit and confirmed it will adhere to Title IX procedures while maintaining student privacy.
