Billy Joel Cancels Concerts Following Diagnosis
Billy Joel has announced the cancellation of 17 stadium shows across North America and the U.K., including a highly anticipated performance in Salt Lake City, due to a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. The “Piano Man” made the announcement on his Instagram on Friday, revealing that the brain disorder has caused issues with his hearing, vision, and balance, especially exacerbated by concert performances.
Joel is currently undergoing physical therapy and has been advised to focus on his recovery. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” he stated. His Salt Lake City show was initially postponed to May 22, 2026, and generated significant excitement, marked by a press conference attended by local personalities, including Utah Utes coach Kyle Whittingham, a long-time fan.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a rare condition, can mirror symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, resulting from the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Symptoms include balance difficulties and confusion. Joel expressed optimism about returning to the stage, stating he looks forward to sharing the joy of his music with fans.
