Police in Germany recently arrested five teenagers linked to the right-wing extremist group “Last Defense Wave,” accused of attempting to undermine the country’s democratic system through violence against migrants and political opponents. The arrests, made during early-morning operations across the country and accompanied by searches at 13 locations, involved four suspects—identified as Benjamin H., Ben-Maxim H., Lenny M., and Jason R.—who are charged with membership in a domestic terror organization, while the fifth, Jerome M., is accused of supporting the group. Each suspect, aged between 14 and 18, faces serious allegations, including attempted murder and aggravated arson.
Federal prosecutors stated that the group was established in mid-April 2024 or earlier, with members viewing themselves as defenders of the “German nation” aiming to collapse Germany’s democratic order. Their activities included attacks on asylum-seeker housing and left-wing political venues. Notably, two suspects were involved in an arson at a cultural center in October, where residents narrowly escaped injury. In January, two others attempted to ignite a fire at an asylum-seeker home while vandalizing it with extremist slogans and symbols.
Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig expressed alarm at the youth of those involved, emphasizing that the rise of right-wing extremism poses a significant concern that transcends age. Additionally, a separate far-right group, “Kingdom of Germany,” was banned last week due to its threat to democracy, reflecting ongoing issues with politically motivated violence in Germany, which saw a 17.2% increase in right-wing violent crimes last year.
