WAC Baseball Tournament Kicks Off with Exciting Openers
MESA, Ariz. – The University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament began with thrilling matchups at Hohokam Stadium on Tuesday. No. 7 seed UT Arlington delivered an impressive performance, defeating No. 6 Tarleton State 11-1. The Mavericks dominated, scoring four runs in the first inning and outhitting the Texans 17-4. Xavier Melendez led UTA with a standout 4-for-5 at the plate, while Larry Haskins contributed a home run and four RBIs. Pitcher Caylon Dygert earned the victory, tossing 6.1 innings with six strikeouts.
In a dramatic second game, No. 8 seed Utah Tech overcame a 3-0 deficit to edge out No. 5 California Baptist 6-5 in 11 innings. Ryan Kroepel secured the win with a decisive RBI, also notable for his pitching effort, allowing just one unearned run in four innings.
The tournament continues on Wednesday, featuring No. 3 Utah Valley against UTA at noon MST, followed by Utah Tech facing No. 4 Grand Canyon at 4 p.m. MST. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+. Fans can look forward to an action-packed tournament as teams vie for advancement.
