House Democrats to Introduce Bill Aimed at ‘Saving NOAA’

House Democrats are set to introduce an amendment aimed at protecting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from further cuts to funding and staffing, particularly in light of recent severe weather events linked to staffing shortages in National Weather Service (NWS) offices. This measure will be presented as part of a Republican budget reconciliation bill and seeks to prevent the dissolution of NOAA, the transfer of its responsibilities to other agencies, and the degradation of its website and datasets.

Democratic Representatives, including Jared Moskowitz, Eric Sorensen, Joe Neguse, and Wesley Bell, emphasize the urgency of this legislation as the hurricane season approaches and extreme weather intensifies. This concern comes after the Trump administration’s previous decisions to reduce NWS staff, contributing to a situation where many forecasting offices are unable to operate fully, particularly overnight. Reports indicate that staffing vacancies exceed 20% in over half of the country’s NWS offices, significantly impacting their operational capabilities during critical weather events.

During a recent tornado outbreak, at least 28 lives were lost in the Midwest and South, raising alarms about the adequacy of weather forecasting resources. While the amendment faces challenges, given Republican control of the House, it highlights the bipartisan recognition of NOAA’s importance in disaster preparedness and public safety.

The National Weather Service has been actively working to mitigate staffing shortages but acknowledges that this may impact service quality in the long term. Experts warn that while recent forecasts performed well, the toll on staffing could eventually lead to a decline in overall performance and effectiveness in severe weather predictions, which are vital for community safety.
