Press Release: Stunning Stained-Glass Dome Unveiled in Utah’s New North Capitol Building
Salt Lake City, UT – A breathtaking stained-glass dome, valued at $1.6 million, has been completed for the new Utah North Capitol Building, reflecting the rich landscapes and heritage of all 29 counties in the state. This vibrant centerpiece will illuminate a multistory atrium when the building opens to the public in 2026, alongside Utah’s inaugural state history museum.
Governor Spencer Cox expressed the symbolic significance of the dome, stating it represents Utah’s shared roots and commitment to a united future. Measuring 25 by 25 feet, the dome is composed of 14,000 individual glass pieces, showcasing Utah’s diverse ecosystems and state symbols, including the honeybee and sego lily, alongside landmarks like Bryce Canyon and Dead Horse Point.
Notably, the dome’s design includes bristlecone pine elements containing sand, rock, and wood from each county, symbolizing the connection to Utah’s ancient landscapes. Dallin Orr, lead glass artist from Holdman Studios, emphasized that the project aims to evoke joy for the beautiful land of Utah.
As the largest skylight created by the studio, the dome’s installation involved crafting each of its 89 uniquely shaped panels before placing them in the Capitol. Project manager James Graham noted the hope that this art piece fosters quality discussions among citizens and officials.
The stained-glass dome was an addition to the original plans for the North Capitol Building, contributing to the overall project cost, which has escalated from an initial estimate of $168 million to $281 million, driven by rising construction prices and project enhancements.
Despite the budget increases, Dana Jones, executive director of the Capitol Preservation Board, believes that this masterpiece will become integral to the Capitol’s historic fabric for generations to come, inviting Utahns to connect with a “wow” moment upon entering.
