Modballs: From Kitchen to Costco, a Protein Snack Sensation

A protein snack born in a Highland kitchen is making waves on the Wasatch Front, thanks to the inspiring story of a high school tennis championship. In 2020, Lone Peak High’s Allison Story and Emma Reynolds celebrated their state doubles victory, fueled by tasty homemade performance-enhancing snacks crafted by Allison’s mother, Jan.

The protein-packed bites, created to provide stamina during matches, caught the attention of teammates and soon sparked a vision for commercialization. Stephen Story, Allie’s father and a seasoned food scientist known for creating Stephen’s Gourmet Hot Cocoa, saw potential in these bites, leading to the birth of Modballs. Along with his sons and a former classmate, he refined the recipe to offer a nutritious, all-natural snack sweetened with honey.

After three years of rigorous marketing, testing, and extensive sampling at various sporting events, Modballs are now gaining traction in Costco locations across Salt Lake City and Lehi, with plans for further distribution. The ping pong-sized snacks are marketed as an alternative to high-caffeine products, promising a sustained energy boost without the crash. Modballs have truly come a long way from their humble beginnings in a family kitchen.
