Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum Opens, Showcasing Sustainable Innovation
Shenzhen, China – The Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, a cutting-edge project by Zaha Hadid Architects, has officially opened in the city’s Guangming District, positioning itself as a cornerstone of technological advancement in the Greater Bay Area. This region is rapidly evolving into a hub for innovation, with a population nearing 100 million.
The museum features a striking, spaceship-like design, characterized by a solid spherical form that faces the urban landscape. Extending into an adjacent science park, the structure includes a series of dynamic outdoor terraces that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding greenery. These terraces function as extensions of the museum’s various galleries, organized around a grand central atrium that serves as a vibrant civic space.
Occupying more than 128,000 square meters, the museum boasts 35,000 square meters of exhibition halls and galleries for both permanent and temporary displays. In addition, the facility incorporates immersive theaters and cinemas, and research laboratories, totaling 6,000 and 5,400 square meters respectively.
Emphasizing environmental sustainability, the museum aims for China’s highest three-star green building certification. Its design utilizes passive environmental strategies such as mitigating solar heat gain and a ventilated facade system. Moreover, features like grey-water recycling, rainwater collection, and on-site energy generation through photovoltaic panels highlight its commitment to conservation.
Advanced digital technologies, including Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D scanning, were paramount during the construction phase, ensuring accurate realization of the architecturally complex forms.
