The Impact of DEI Funding Cuts and a Weak Job Market on Recent Black College Graduates

Howard University senior Dezmond Rosier, a first-generation college graduate, initially aimed for a career in the federal government but pivoted due to job market challenges exacerbated by federal DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) rollbacks under the Trump administration. Rosier, along with three other Black students, expressed concern over entering a job market with a rising unemployment rate for new graduates, recorded at 5.8% by March, compared to 4.6% the previous year. Walter Pearson, CEO of College Bound Parenting, noted a stark decline in job placement success, from 90% to 50%.

The students voiced feelings of being overlooked and expressed a desire for workplaces where they feel welcomed rather than merely tolerated. Rosier plans to engage in grassroots politics in Maryland, reflecting a shift toward community involvement as traditional government prospects diminish. Students from other institutions also reported anxiety over DEI rollbacks affecting their recruitment and internship opportunities, with concerns that explicit commitments to diversity may vanish soon.

Grey Snyder, a psychology senior, recounted struggles securing research positions due to funding uncertainties tied to DEI-related cuts, emphasizing the detrimental impact on studies involving marginalized communities. The narrative underscored students’ reluctance to modify their résumés to downplay their identities, affirming the importance of embracing their backgrounds.

Experts like Louise Ross urged innovation in job searches, encouraging students to explore entrepreneurial avenues and leverage community networks. Despite daunting circumstances, students expressed resilience and a steadfast commitment to pursuing opportunities aligned with their identities and values in a shifting landscape.
