Southern Utah University Athletics Achieves High Marks in Academic Progress
CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah University (SUU) Athletics has celebrated a notable achievement in the recent NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) report, with a multi-year APR score of 985, a marked improvement from last year’s 971. This accomplishment underscores SUU’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence among its student-athletes.
The APR is a crucial metric created by the NCAA to assess the academic performance of scholarship athletes, considering factors like eligibility, retention, and graduation rates. The NCAA sets a minimum benchmark of 930; with an APR of 985, SUU is significantly above this standard, indicating a robust culture of academic success.
The gymnastics team has once again set the precedent, achieving a perfect APR of 1000 for the second consecutive year. Athletic Director Doug Knuth expressed pride in the collective effort, stating, "Raising our APR by 14 points in just one year is no small feat. It speaks volumes about the priority we place on academic performance at Southern Utah."
Nine SUU programs improved their APR scores, with volleyball seeing the most significant jump of 14 points. Softball and men’s track also made impressive gains, further highlighting SUU’s comprehensive academic support system.
Additionally, SUU boasts a remarkable Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 85%, surpassing the general student population by around five percentage points. This statistic emphasizes the university’s dedication to ensuring student-athletes remain eligible and graduate.
Kayla Kovar, Director of Athletic Academic Performance, credited the collaborative efforts of SUU’s academic team for this success. She noted that the support provided to student-athletes, combined with their determination, has led to record accomplishments.
The recent APR and GSR results demonstrate Southern Utah Athletics’ dual commitment to fostering champions on the field and excelling academically, thus preparing student-athletes for future success.
