Tribute to Tom Wharton: Celebrated Utah Sports and Outdoors Writer Passes Away at 74
Tom Wharton, a beloved figure in Utah journalism, passed away at the age of 74 on Thursday in Millcreek. Wharton dedicated 45 years of his life to The Salt Lake Tribune, covering high school sports and outdoor adventures, showcasing his deep love for the state he knew intimately.
Starting his career in 1970, Wharton quickly established a niche in high school sports, influenced by his own experiences as a young journalist. After winning a writing contest as a student, he was assigned to cover the state high school basketball tournament—a commitment he maintained for over five decades. Even after retiring in 2016, he continued to volunteer for one game each year, only pausing due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Wharton’s work extended beyond sports; he also made a significant impact as an outdoor columnist. His acclaimed series "A Year With the Great Salt Lake" highlighted environmental issues and recreation around the region. He published five travel books, starting with "Utah: A Family Travel Guide" in 1987, inspired by family adventures across the state.
Colleagues described Wharton as a masterful storyteller who saw the importance in every game he wrote about. His remarkable career included covering iconic events like the 1979 NCAA basketball final and the 2002 Winter Olympics. In 2023, his contributions were recognized with induction into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation.
Born on November 9, 1950, Wharton was an ardent family man, married twice and survived by four children, his second wife, two stepchildren, and numerous grandchildren. His profound connection to Utah and its sports culture leaves a lasting legacy.
Memorial service arrangements are yet to be announced.
