Utah Students Showcase Their Knowledge Through Sci-Tech Activities at Lagoon’s Physics Day

Students Explore Physics at Lagoon on Annual Physics Day

FARMINGTON — High school and middle school students from across Utah gathered at Lagoon on Friday for the 35th Annual Physics Day, an event designed to ignite interest in science and technology. Students showcased their projects through a fair-style presentation, highlighting weeks of creativity and hard work in class.

Among the various activities, sixth-graders Jake Coleman and Brenton Brown engaged in robot sumo wrestling, while teams constructed mock-ups of potential amusement rides, delving into the physics behind their designs. Notably, George De St. Jeor and Matea Peterson from West Point Junior High crafted a ride inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s "Starry Night."

A key feature of the day was the egg-drop challenge, where students dropped their designs from the park’s sky ride, testing their engineering skills. Professional representatives, including Utah State University student Ethan Wayland, also participated, sharing insights about satellite design and fostering a passion for STEM careers among the younger attendees.

"Physics teaches critical thinking, essential in any career," noted USU physics representative JR Dennison. The event not only promotes engagement in science but also nurtures the next generation of innovators.
