Rep. Jefferson Moss Appointed New Director of Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity
SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. Jefferson Moss, the majority leader of the Utah House of Representatives, has announced his resignation to accept a new role as the interim executive director of the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity (GOEO). Effective May 30, Moss will begin his new position on June 2, pending confirmation from the Utah Senate.
In a statement, Gov. Spencer Cox expressed confidence in Moss, highlighting his unique blend of public service and private sector experience. "Jefferson Moss brings a rare combination of public service, private sector experience, and a deep understanding of innovation and education," Cox stated, adding that Moss has been a pivotal force behind many of Utah’s progressive initiatives.
Moss expressed enthusiasm for continuing to serve Utah, stating, “While I will miss being part of the Legislature, I look forward to continued collaboration with you as we work to build a stronger and brighter future for all Utahns.”
He succeeds Ryan Starks, who announced his departure from GOEO earlier this month to pursue other opportunities. Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz commended Moss as an extraordinary leader and a trusted colleague, emphasizing his collaborative approach and significant contributions to the state.
Moss has been a member of the Utah House since 2017, with prior roles on the Utah State Board of Education and the Saratoga Springs City Council. His resignation marks the second time in recent years that a House majority leader has stepped down; former Rep. Francis Gibson left the position in 2021 for family and career reasons.
The Republican delegates will soon choose a successor to Moss’ seat, with the House GOP caucus set to elect a new majority leader in the coming weeks.
