Neighbors Express Concerns That Proposed Provo Waterpark Will Cause Unwanted Disruption

Residents Voice Concerns Over Proposed Waterpark Near Slate Canyon

PROVO, Utah — Local residents near Slate Canyon are expressing their apprehensions about a proposed waterpark that threatens to encroach on cherished green spaces. Katherine Hall, a long-time Provo resident, emphasized the tranquility of the canyon, a significant part of her family’s history. “This was kind of their playground,” she noted, reflecting on her children’s countless hours spent in nature.

The proposal to relocate the aging Splash Summit waterpark has raised alarms among community members. Bryan Bayles, associated with the project, acknowledged the need for improved facilities but highlighted the community’s desire to maintain Slate Canyon’s natural amenities. Residents like Jeff Whitlock support development but argue it should not compromise local assets that benefit the community.

Hall raised concerns about environmental impacts, stating that removing vegetation from critical hillsides could lead to erosion affecting nearby communities. In response to the proposal, Hall has initiated a petition opposing the waterpark, having already gathered over 600 signatures from concerned neighbors.

As the developers prepare to formalize their plans, the city has yet to comment on the situation. The community remains hopeful for the preservation of this vital public land for future generations.
