Kentucky Derby-Winning Jockey Faces Suspension and $62,000 Fine for Excessive Striking of Horse

Junior Alvarado, the jockey who rode Sovereignty to victory at the Kentucky Derby, has been fined over $60,000 for violating riding crop rules during the race. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) announced that Alvarado struck the horse with his crop more than the allowed six times, leading to a penalty of 10% of his $310,000 winnings, which was then doubled due to a previous infraction within the last 180 days, resulting in a total fine of $62,000.

In addition to the hefty fine, Alvarado received a two-day suspension from racing on May 29 and 30. His infraction constituted a Class 3 violation of HISA regulations, which limit the number of strikes a jockey can make during a race. Following the Derby, this was Alvarado’s second offense in this timeframe.

The Kentucky Derby, held at Churchill Downs, marked a significant moment for Alvarado, who has aspired to win the prestigious event since childhood. Despite suffering a shoulder injury and a fall prior to the race, he managed to secure victory. Alvarado now has 30 days to pay the imposed fine.

HISA does allow jockeys to appeal penalties through a hearing process before its Internal Adjudication Panel. Alvarado did not provide immediate comments regarding the situation. The enforcement of such penalties is part of HISA’s efforts to maintain integrity and fairness in horse racing.
