Angel City Defender Savy King Hospitalized After Medical Incident on Field
Los Angeles—Angel City FC defender Savy King is currently hospitalized and in stable condition following a medical event during her team’s NWSL match against the Utah Royals on Friday night. The 20-year-old fell to the ground around the 74th minute at BMO Stadium and received immediate medical attention before being carted off and transported by EMS to a hospital.
Eleri Earnshaw, Angel City’s senior assistant coach, provided a post-game update, stating, “She is responsive, and her family is with her, as are our medical staff. She’s in good hands.” Following the incident, players and staff from both teams formed a circle on the field, with Utah defender Alex Loera leading a moment of prayer to show solidarity and support for King.
Earnshaw expressed gratitude for the unity displayed, noting that the suggestion to gather came from a Utah player. “It was a scary situation; it was much bigger than football,” she said. Additionally, she commended Angel City defender Megan Reid, a trained paramedic, for her calming presence during the chaotic moment.
The match resumed with 12 minutes of stoppage time after King’s removal. Despite objections from Utah’s head coach Jimmy Coenraets, who questioned whether the game should have continued, play proceeded. He remarked on the emotional impact of the incident on players.
King, who joined Angel City from Bay FC this season, has been a consistent presence on the field, starting all eight matches in 2025 and previously representing the U.S. at the U19 and U20 levels.
